The 6 Things a Forward-Deployed Sales Leader Owns Day to Day

6 things a Forward-Deployed Sales Leader owns

A Forward-Deployed Sales Leader is not a fractional VP. Not a consultant. Not a coach who shows up monthly. They are embedded inside your sales team for the duration of the engagement, and the number is theirs to move, not theirs to report on.

Six concrete plays they own day to day.

1. Pipeline reviews on the deals that matter

Not all deals. The ones that decide your quarter. Weekly. They open each deal, ask the questions the playbook tells them to ask, and the rep walks out with three specific next moves, not encouragement.

2. Deal strategy on every named account

The accounts that decide the year get a written deal strategy. Stakeholders mapped by name. The plays running on each. The Champion's internal selling plan. Updated every two weeks, not once a quarter.

3. Live coaching on real buying committees

When a deal moves into stage three, the leader joins the next stakeholder call. Not to take over. To watch the rep run it, then debrief in fifteen minutes after with two specific moves to try on the next one. The coaching is on real deals, not role-plays.

4. Playbook enforcement on the opportunities in front of you

The playbook is not a Notion page. It is a thing that gets enforced on the deals you have right now. If the discovery framework was not run on the call, the leader catches it before the deal advances. The advance does not happen until the gap is closed.

5. Multi-thread mapping on advancing deals

Before any deal moves to stage four, the leader checks coverage. Four stakeholders mapped or it does not advance. If the rep has the champion and nobody else, the leader makes the introduction request part of the next call. Coverage gets built, deal by deal, until it is the default.

6. The forecast call

The number you report up the chain is the leader's number. They scored every deal against the playbook. They know which stage-four deal has no Economic Buyer named. They know which stage-three deal has a champion who went silent. The forecast is grounded in signals, not in stage weights and gut.

What they do not do

They do not run prospecting. They do not own the SDR team. They do not write your marketing copy. The agent fleet handles the prep, the scoring, and the CRM work. The leader does the moves a human has to do, on the deals that decide your year.

How this is different from other shapes

A fractional VP gives you advice and leaves you to act on it. A consultant gives you a deck. A coach gives you a session twice a month. A Forward-Deployed Sales Leader does the work, on your deals, with your reps, until the deals close.
